Later in the hunt, I again followed Red through an end row of corn, hoping to help guide him to a pheasant and further encourage his excitement toward hunting. The corn here seemed noticeably taller and created an atmosphere in which it felt like it was just Red and I. Focused on the hunt, I zoned out all noise except the sounds of the dog and I’s steps and the potential rustling of a pheasant. The trampling noises created by Red veering left caused my heart to pound, leading to future thoughts of Red’s success – he’s finally found one!

Then a hen darted into my row, behind Red at this point, before scurrying away.

I called Red to let him take over (hopefully he would). With his nose finally to the ground, he circled back and quickly picked up the hen’s scent before rushing down the same direction. I waited with anticipation, smiling and heart pounding, calling to the others of Red being hot on a trail. The desire for my dog being successful at an all-time high. Suddenly, leaves broke off stalks like snapping twigs as the nervous hen took flight. I waited for shots, tailing the bird’s flight with my eyes as if they were a gun.

No shots were fired. The hen landed safely in a row of millet, a number of yards away.

I praised Red for his success, apologizing for the lack of shooting as we continued forward. I too realized then for the first time, the desire to shoot something serge within me.

Maybe Red wasn’t the only one who needed to learn how to hunt.
